Video: Sequester squabble: Anticipating spending cuts

>>> but the reality is that this is going to happen on friday. the president and the senate are not going to get a bill passed and to you and have your chamber approve that bill before friday. i mean, the sequester is going to happen.

>> at this point, i would agree. it looks that way. but hope springs eternal .

>> welcome back to "hardball." that was speaker john boehner last night in an interview with cbs. those spending cuts will happen it would seem. and president obama was on capitol hill today to unveil the statue on parks. he's not meeting until friday night. winston churchill said there's two kinds of success. initial and ultimate. it depends on which they will find. robert gibbs of course is famous. he served as president obama 's first white house press secretary . and beat me on jeopardy. and michael steele is the former chair of the republican committee. both are msnbc in house thinkers. this is important. the public isn't liking this subject. i don't like it. i don't want to hear about it again. but friday night there's going to be this dramatic sort of sitting together. the president is going to sit with these leaders. what can possibly get done before midnight when the act is already in effect basically? the government's going to stop spending $85 billion.

>> i don't think anything's going to happen.

>> why did the president call them down to meet?

>> i think quite frankly they're starting the negotiations for what's going to happen a few weeks or a few months into this when people start feeling the real pain in these communities. i don't think it's theater. i think it's the beginning of how we're ultimately going to get out of this. nobody's going to move at this point unless republicans are going to talk about tax revenue to make this balanced.

>> and democrats are willing?

>> democrats are willing to expect spending cuts and do a lot more on entitlements and walk away from tax revenue . nobody's going to do that.

>> who goes through the door first here, right?

>> yep.

>> why respect learen't leaders able to get through the door at the same time?

>> because they're largely idiots. and the fact of the matter is they allowed this thing to get to this point and lose control of it, quite frankly . you hit the right word. this is theater. this is the president coming to the table on this after the fact. why not --

>> let me -- we all think we're smarter than politicians. sometimes they operate under scary conditions. i think john boehner is scared most of the time. listen to what ron johnson -- now, he's a tea party candidate guy. he's a senator from wisconsin. he told fox news earlier this week that speaker bainoehnerboehner's in trouble with his own party. let's listen to ron johnson . decide if he's right.

>> i don't quite honestly believe that speaker boehner would be speaker if that happens. i think he would lose the speakership.

>> does he have a gun to his head?

>> yeah, he does. look. we just raised $300 billion in taxes.

>> on the top 1%.

>> you raised taxes. go to the fundamentals, chris. i don't care if it's the top 1% or the bottom 50%.

>> the top cares.

>> i'm sure you do care.

>> let's not make conjecture part of this show.

>> that is an issue for a lot of the republican leaders in the house.

>> so the word tax is

>> it's not just the word tax. it's the idea we've raised taxes and we haven't gotten cuts in spending.

>> ronald reagan put together a tax reform bill that got rid of a lot of loopholes. so since when is tax reform bad?

>> it's not bad. the problem is we had a huge cut for ten years that created this spending cut problem that we were trying to dig out of. we're trying to remember the economic tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 that were supposed to create this fabulous economy. i'll let the people of america judge the efficacy of those tack cuts. you know, michael you talk about everybody stepping through the door at the same time. even as you say republicans are not putting revenue on the table. senator johnson's comment was the most insightful and important comment that will happen in washington this week.

>> when he says president boehner isn't alive if they talk taxes?

>> because the republicans can't get out of this box. they do, they guarantee themselves one thing. john boehner would lose his job as speaker. and if someone says let's do more revenue and you're republican, the only thing you're going to guarantee is a primary challenge from the right and probably a loss.

>> and i submit the other side of that box is a president who cannot put real cuts in entitlement reform on the table with his base.

>> you think that's actually true?

>> if it's not true, why doesn't he do it? where is the --

>> i'm with you in a sense. i think he can. because i think big city liberal democrats even if they see a deal on the table, a lot will vote for it. as the tea party fearing.

>> let's test that and see if it's true.

>> am i right or wrong? would the liberals go along with it if there was a deal?

>> so you're going with a --

>> yes, the president would.

>> this is good. progress.

>> the president's put changed cpi, a better way of calculating --

>> explain.

>> basically again, it's a better way of calculating -- more accurate way --

>> to figure out what's in the bag. it decides what inflation rate effects the average person.

>> right. here's my question. we know the president's going to put that on the table. tell me. boehner just sat with scott pelley . pick a journalist, anybody. what revenue are you putting on the table?

>> he wanted to cut -- he wanted to raise taxes for the top 1%. we did.

>> this is the game. this is the game.

>> this is not the game. tell me what cuts have we made? what cuts have we made? okay. the president is for change cpi. where is it? i don't see the proposal. i don't see the bill. is harry reid presenting that?

>> let's take a look at this la latest polling. rather than emphasizing the country by a five point margin they think obama is focused on unity over partisanship. when we asked whether americans agree with what republicans are proposing to do nearly 6 in 10 disagree with the republicans. nobody is mother teresa here. nobody thinks they're sticking their neck out any further than they have to pop but why do the republicans -- why is your brand of your party so sticky right now.

>> because we have messaged this horribly.

>> what's the message they're not getting out?

>> it's been all over the place.

>> what is the right message?

>> the right message is to really -- as we should have said from the beginning focus on how to create jobs in the country and tie that to spending. we've not done that. we've not given a way forward that really lays out exactly what the cost is to this economy for the level of spending that we've been doing.

>> i'm going back to --

>> can i make one final point?

>> sure.

>> why is it when we put on the table a serious discussion about cutting the spending of this country, all of a sudden that's partisan and we're not --

>> i know that. i think most of the people -- i do --

>> to be fair, michael, we have to do three things to get our fiscal house in order. we have to reduce spending, we have to do something on entitlements, and something else on revenue. i think the point of the sequester is this is taking a meat ax to the budget. this is not -- hold on. this is not identifying things that we know don't work and we should eliminate. i mean, this --

>> this was your proposal. this came from the white house .

>> here's the game again.

>> okay.

>> you know why you're upset and he's not? you know why he's playing this game and you're not? because remember --

>> some people are serious about spending.

>> and in the beginning carter benefitted. he beat teddy kennedy with this. as these things drag on, drag on for months, they blame the top guy. they just do.

>> there's no game here.

>> he says our message isn't right but now his message is let's blame somebody else for how we got in the mess.

>> i'm just pointing out a fact to you. i'm just saying. you want to ignore the role of the white house putting this in place.

>> is the president doing everything right here?

>> no. nobody is doing everything right.

>> can you say the president's not doing everything right here?

>> no, he can't.

>> i just did.

>> then do. can i hear you?

>> i said nobody is doing everything right. everybody's going to get mud on their shirt.

>> i feel that.

>> let's hope this isn't a game. let's hope this is a series of serious proposals.

>> when they start closing down government spending in defense and those people in stores start closing, we'll see impact. thank you for joining us.

>>> up next, republican tactics only mccarthy could love. there he is. and he's back. he's got a new name and

Cinderella's slipper: the ultimate must-have shoe

NEW YORK (AP) ? There would be no "happily ever after" for Cinderella without her glitzy glass slippers, so careful attention was paid to the shoes for the princess-to-be's Broadway opening this weekend.

For "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella," which officially opens Sunday at the Broadway Theatre, costume designer William Ivey Long and footwear designer Stuart Weitzman created a pair of pumps so sparkly they "light up the upper balcony," Weitzman says.

"The shoe is its own character in the show, and it will inspire the dream for so many other women."

Shoe shopaholics and Carrie Bradshaw types surely have been inspired by the Cinderella fashion fantasy, muses Weitzman, a 26-year industry veteran. How could they not? After all, he says, Cinderella gets the shoes ? flattering, delicate and powerful all at once ? and then gets her Prince Charming.

When people describe the stunning bride or the prettiest red-carpet starlet, the comparison rarely ? if ever ? is made to Sleeping Beauty or Snow White.

It's always Cinderella, belle of the ball.

"Cinderella is the gold standard for aspiration," agrees Long. "The slippers are so iconic, and they are recognized worldwide."

He says their only rival might be Dorothy's red ruby slippers in "The Wizard of Oz."

Because the shoes are so famous, the designers had to work with a certain set of expectations: The shoes had to be romantic and sexy, have a sparkly fairy-dust touch ? and they had to be seen by everyone in the theater.

Actress Laura Osnes, who plays Cinderella, couldn't risk shards and splinters from real glass, so the designers used Plexiglas instead.

Weitzman employed a welded-construction technique that uses no screws, normally used in high heels, so Cinderella could have a seamless look.

"This is the most magical world I've been asked to conjure up," says Long, whose 60-plus show credits include costumes for "Chicago," ''Hairspray" and "The Boy From Oz." Instead of going all Disney or using the famous French illustrations that came a century before (Cinderella-style folk tales are hundreds of years older than that) as inspiration, Long decided to weave nature ? with an emphasis on butterflies and vines ? into his visual picture instead of a particular time or place.

The idea that Cinderella had to be the most beautiful woman in the room, with the most gorgeous dress and coveted shoes, is what guided him and Weitzman, Long says.

They had to walk a fine line to avoid anything too gimmicky, even working on the giant Broadway stage, so they decided against threading lights through the heel of the shoe or other special effects.

Weitzman knows how to create shoes that light up a room. For years, he made "million-dollar Oscar shoes," diamond-covered footwear that a celebrity would wear to the Academy Awards. He gave that up at the height of the recession, but says he can do pretty much the same dazzling look with crystals.

The designer says he could imagine his typical customer wearing a version of the Cinderella slipper at a summer party, a night at the opera or a night on the town. He adds: "It would be one sexy shoe with cool jeans."

Yes, his Clearly Timeless collection based on the fairy-tale footwear is being shipped to stores.

Britain's resolve to become more energy efficient is about to be tested

With Britain facing an energy squeeze and a new carbon tax, the country?s attitude to energy efficiency is about to be tested

In the?coming weeks, the closure of coal and oil-fired power plants is expected to reduce the amount of electricity generated in Britain by 10 percent. Although shortages are not expected, government experts say the country will have to import significantly more gas in the coming years, at a time when prices are expected to rise on world markets. Electricity prices are already due to rise this year because of a new carbon tax on utilities.

To some extent, the punishment is self-inflicted ? plant closures could have been delayed for another three years. However, the government estimates that with ?socially cost-effective investment?, Britain could be consuming 11% less energy by 2020 (196 terawatt hours), equivalent to the output of 22 power stations.

There is certainly room for improvement ? half of the nation?s 27 million homes are not properly insulated, for example ? but indications are that it will be something of a challenge to persuade households and businesses to invest in energy efficiency.

One problem is that the majority of people don?t think they can do anything about rising energy prices. Instead, they blame electricity companies for making excessive profits, even though margins in the power sector tend to be thin.

Then there is the ?hassle? cost, which is also seen as putting a brake on investment, especially in companies which are reluctant to disrupt production for building works.

A third obstacle is in the commercial rental market, where landlords have little incentive to invest in energy-saving improvements because it is the tenants who have to pay the electricity bills.

The government?s approach has been to introduce incentives for households and business. The most recent is the so-called ?Green Deal?, where households and businesses can pay off energy-saving improvements in installments.

Consumer groups say the test of the government?s commitment to energy efficiency will be determined by how much of the carbon tax it actually spends on energy-saving measures, such as upgrading the homes of poorer households.

One study, from Cambridge Econometrics, goes so far as to suggest that, properly deployed, revenues from the carbon tax could boost Britain?s economy, eradicate ?fuel poverty? (defined as households which spend more than 10% of their income on heating), and make a significant contribution to reaching Britain?s carbon-reduction targets.

Daily iPhone App: DailyArt serves up a new masterpiece each day

Kick off your day with a new work of art from DailyArt. The iPhone app serves up a new masterpiece every day and includes paintings and photographs from a wide range of artists like the classic impressionist Monet and pioneer photographer Henry Fox Talbot.

DailyArt Pro uses push notifications to alert you when the artwork of the day has been posted. Each image includes the title of the work along with the artist's name. You can tap on these names to view background information about the piece. I appreciated the educational aspect of DailyArt as it allowed me to not only view paintings I had never seen before, but also learn how and why they were created.

As is the case with most apps, DailyArt has a social component that lets you share your favorite work of art on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can also send a masterpiece via email or save it your camera roll. The app uses a swipe-based interface to navigate between today's artwork and those featured in the past. You can also pinch and zoom on a piece to view its intricate details. If a painting catches your eye, you can mark it and save it to a gallery of your favorites.

I enjoyed the spontaneity of DailyArt Pro and looked forward to learning about a new work of art each day. The one feature that I wished it had was a filter that would let me choose which artists, styles or time periods I would see. It would be wonderful to see impressionist paintings for a week and then switch to modern painters for the next week.

With its superb images and informative biographical blurbs, DailyArt is perfect for those looking to add some culture to their day. You can download DailyArt Pro for 99-cents from the iOS App Store. It is a universal app that'll run on your iPhone or iPad.

Trump Twitter mystery! Who hacked The Donald?

In what appears to be the latest in a minor wave of attacks on Twitter accounts belonging to out-sized corporate entities, an out-of-character tweet from Donald Trump's verified account set the Internet abuzz, and then disappeared, shortly before noon ET on Thursday.

"These hoes think they classy, well that's the class I'm skippen," read the suspect remark issued from @realDonaldTrump. It was a glaring non sequitur following tweets such as "Republicans must be careful with immigration?don?t give our country away," and "Wow, Macy's numbers just in-Trump is doing better than ever ? thanks for your great support!"

"Yes, obviously the account has been hacked and we are looking for the perpetrator," Rhona Graff, senior vice president, assistant to the president of the Trump Organization, told NBC News via email.

This confirmation was quickly echoed by Trump himself, in a tweet that read, "My Twitter has been seriously hacked ? and we are looking for the perpetrators."

Cut off after a single rogue tweet, the Trump Twitter anomaly was far shorter than the Burger King and Jeep takeovers earlier this week. On Monday, Burger King's Twitter account was hacked and renamed McDonalds, and over the course of a hour, sent out 53 tweets (and garnered 73,421 retweets) making light of the situation. The Tuesday attack on Jeep's Twitter account ? which included the erroneous announcement that the car maker had been taken over by Cadillac ? ceased after just 10 minutes and 13 tweets.

Soon after @Jeep regained control, the Twitter accounts of MTV and BET appeared to be compromised. The MTV account tweeted claims the network had been taken over by BET, and BET tweeted it was now owned by MTV. This turned out to be a publicity stunt by the networks, both owned by Viacom. As NBC News reported on Tuesday, the account of a PR representative warned of the hack ahead of time on Twitter and then both MTV and BET copped to the scheme after the "hack."

NBC News has asked the Trump Organization how Trump was able to regain control of his Twitter account so quickly, and will update this story if we receive a response.

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on Twitterand/or Facebook.

Why Free Apps Turn Me Off

Of the 300 million-plus people using iOS 6 in one form or another -- and millions more using iOS 5 -- I get the feeling I'm a dying breed. Why? I generally dislike and distrust free apps. I can blame some of this on the overwhelming influence of games, kids, and the psychology of the masses.

Samsung details 'TV Discovery' service to be unveiled at MWC

Samsung

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

Samsung is setting up to launch a new service at MWC called "TV Discovery", which is supposed to help users find video and live TV content with their devices. Similarly to what HTC just announced with its own TV offerings on the One, Samsung will use its service to aggregate content from multiple sources to be streamed to your devices. The goal is to bring live TV, video on-demand and online content to one place, and make it all searchable without caring which service the programming is on. The content will be available on Samsung's Smart TV's and "supported mobile devices", but no specifics were given. Similarly to what Samsung is already doing with its Peel partnership, devices will be able to be used as a universal remote control as well.

Samsung says that at the launch, the TV Discovery service will aggregate from Netflix and Blockbuster in the U.S. and Acetrax, Wuaki, MovieMax, FilmIn, Chili, Pathé and SF Anytime in Europe. Youtube is also mentioned as a potential video source. We should have a better idea of how the service will work and across which devices at its unveiling at MWC next week.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler, Army veteran Rocky Bleier to lead Myrtle Beach Memorial Day parade

MYRTLE BEACH -- Former Pittsburgh Steeler and U.S. Army veteran Rocky Bleier will be this year?s grand marshal at Myrtle Beach?s Memorial Day weekend parade, the city announced Thursday.

Bleier played one season for the Steelers before being drafted by the Army in December 1968. While serving in Vietnam in 1969 he was wounded during an ambush and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, according to a press release from the city.

He returned to the Steelers the next year and played for the team until 1980, retiring with four Super Bowl wins.

The parade, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. May 25, is the highlight of a month?s worth of activities for the city?s Military Appreciation Days.

The city?s Military Appreciation Days Committee met Thursday afternoon to work toward finalizing the rest of the month?s events and activities.

New this year will be a Veterans Beard and ?Stache Beach Bash, where participants will compete in a number of facial hair categories ? including one for women.

Men entering the competition need to be veterans. To broaden the contest, organizer Dana King said women who would like to participate don?t have to be veterans.

?Ladies just have to be a lady and show up,? he said at the committee meeting. ?Generally that is a bigger draw than a bunch of hairy dudes on stage.?

King said he believes the event will be the first-ever veteran-exclusive beard and mustache competition.

?[The committee was] looking for different things we could do,? he said. ?I was looking for something unique, something that hadn?t been done before and is fun.?

Other activities shaping up to take place in May include a ?meals ready-to-eat? tasting and cooking contest, 5K road race and band concerts. The committee has worked with local businesses who will give a discount to members of the military throughout May.

As grand marshal, Bleier will lead the parade on Ocean Boulevard and mingle with people at the Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic that same day.

Previous grand marshals include astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Sen. John McCain.

Casts of "Les Mis?rables," "Chicago," "Dreamgirls" set for Oscars' musical tribute

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - This year's Oscars broadcast will go heavy on the jazz hands.

The producers of the telecast have lined up a list of big names for their tribute to "Chicago," "Dreamgirls," "Les Mis?rables" and other film musicals of the past decade. Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls"), Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Chicago"), and Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter, Aaron Tveit and Eddie Redmayne ("Les Mis?rables") will all add some razzle dazzle to the proceedings.

The Oscars will be broadcast on Sunday and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who is no slouch in the music department himself.

"We are pleased to have been able to amass so much talent to create the celebration of musicals of the last decade that we envisioned," producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement. "We are thrilled that so many talented actors have agreed to bring our vision to life."

Indeed, the show's producers have done an impressive job of securing big musical names. In addition to the tribute, they have lined up Adele and Norah Jones, convinced Barbra Streisand to perform on the Oscars for the first time in over three decades and enticed Dame Shirley Bassey to make her Oscars debut.

Now all they need to do to make the evening an audatory feast is to ensure Crowe doesn't get a solo during the "Les Mis?rables" section.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The media called it "The Twitter Predictor," and some scoffed at the idea that by analyzing activity on the social media tool one could predict economic markets like the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But today, Indiana University associate professor Johan Bollen's work received a rare form of validation: a United States patent.

Working hand-in-hand with Indiana University's Research and Technology Corp., the professor of informatics at IU's School of Informatics and Computing called receiving the patent license "a quantum leap for us" and a "huge milestone."

IURTC actually sought and received the patent -- bringing IURTC's total number of active U.S. patents to 171 -- and will license use of the invention formally titled "Predicting Economic Trends via Network Communication Mood Tracking" to Bollen's start-up company, Guidewave Consulting. IURTC is a shareholder in Guidewave and holds a revenue-bearing license agreement with Guidewave that allows the university to collect royalties from sales.

Bollen and his Ph.D. student Huina Mao, co-inventor of the mood tracking system that analyzes hundreds of millions of tweets each day, first gained attention after posting a research paper, "Twitter mood predicts the stock market," at the open access online science archive arXiv on Oct. 16, 2010. After two days, Google had returned nearly 70,000 hits on the title, media picked up on the story, and within a few months hedge funds were offering to invest millions of dollars in their system.

But it's today's official issuance of U.S. Patent No. 8,380,607 that confirms Bollen's and Mao's work as unique, novel and worthy of protection.

"It's an important milestone for a start-up to receive a patent, as it is very likely to help make the company successful," said IURTC Director of Technology Transfer Bill Brizzard, who worked with Bollen on the patenting process that took over two years. "Would-be partners who might have been reluctant in the past will now see this as a safer investment."

The patent also means competitors will be excluded from using the same system. Instead, they'll need to buy the information from Guidewave.

"The past two years have seen tremendous growth in this industry, some of it possibly inspired by our work," Bollen said. "So the patent is quite relevant to the success of our business. Our efforts are being acknowledged by its issuance."

The network tracking system calculates indicators of the public mood state along a multitude of dimensions. The original work used six mood categories -- tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue and confusion -- but those have since been expanded to provide an even more accurate and complete picture of changing public and economic conditions. By tracking the content in real time of what is now up to 500 million tweets per day, the network system can detect subtle changes in public conditions that are correlated to specific entities like the Dow Jones and various other financial and economic indicators. Bollen describes it as a process that is constantly on the look-out for interesting statistical patterns in social media, finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.

"A lot of companies can ask people how they feel about a specific brand, product or topic, but we're probing the underlying mood state of entire communities," Bollen said. "We're focused on offering our analytics, the data, to a wide variety a domains, from hedge funds and banks to government agencies and even personal investors."

The partnership between IURTC and Guidewave has been a strong one, both Bollen and Brizzard noted, and the patent and licensing process has been one designed to benefit IU and Indiana.

"The purpose of us licensing from IURTC is to give back to our school, the university and the state of Indiana," Bollen said. "We want to make sure that the community benefits from our work."

"We're trying to provide a benefit to the public by making use of the research that happens at IU," Brizzard added.

Russian blast sparks 'meteorite rush'

The so-called "meteorite rush" has begun around the city of Chelyabinsk, where people have been searching in the snow and ice for chunks of the meteor that hit Russia last week. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

By Alissa de Carbonnel, Reuters

MOSCOW ??A meteor that exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains and sent fireballs blazing to Earth has set off a rush to find fragments of the space rock which hunters hope could fetch thousands of dollars apiece.

Friday's blast and the shock wave that followed shattered windows, injured almost 1,200 people and caused about $33 million worth of damage, said local authorities.

It also started a "meteorite rush" around the industrial city of Chelyabinsk, 950 miles (1,500 kilometers) east of Moscow, where groups of people have started combing through the snow and ice. One amateur space enthusiast estimated that chunks could be worth anything up to 66,000 rubles ($2,200) per gram ??more than 40 times the current cost of gold.

"The price is hard to say yet . ... The fewer meteorites that are recovered, the higher their price," said Dmitry Kachkalin, a member of the Russian Society of Amateur Meteorite Lovers. Meteorites are parts of a meteor that have fallen to Earth.

Scientists at the Urals Federal University were the first to announce a significant find: 53 small, stony, black objects around Lake Chebarkul, near Chelyabinsk, which tests confirmed were small meteorites. The fragments were only 0.5 to 1 centimeter (0.2 to 0.4 inches) across, but the scientists said larger pieces may have crashed into the lake, where a crater in the ice about 8 meters (26 feet) wide opened up after Friday's explosion.

"We just completed tests, and confirm that the pieces of matter found by our experts around Lake Chebarkul are really meteorites," Viktor Grokhovsky, a scientist with the Urals Federal University and the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the RIA news agency. "These are classified as ordinary chondrites, or stony meteorites, with an iron content of about 10 percent."

He did not say whether the fragments had told his team anything about the origins of the meteor, which NASA estimated was 55 feet (17 meters) across before entering Earth's atmosphere and weighed about 10,000 tons.

Pieces of a meteorite are seen in a Russian laboratory on Monday. Fifty-three pieces have been brought for analysis to the Urals Federal University in Yekaterinburg. The largest one is one centimeter (a half-inch) in diameter, the smallest is about one millimeter.

The main fireball streaked across the sky at a speed of about 30 kilometers (19 miles) per second before crashing into the snowy wastes, according to Roscosmos, Russia's space agency.

More than 20,000 people took part in search and cleanup operations over the weekend in and around Chelyabinsk, which is in the heart of a region packed with industrial military plants. Many other people were in the area just hoping to find a meteorite, after what was described by scientists as a once-in-a-century event.

Residents of a village near Chelyabinsk searched the snowy streets, collecting stones they hoped would prove to be the real thing. But not all were ready to sell.

"I will keep it. Why sell it? I didn't have a rich lifestyle before, so why start now?" a woman in a pink woolen hat and winter jacket told state television Rossiya-24 as she clutched a small black pebble.

The Internet filled quickly with advertisements from eager hunters hoping to sell what they said were meteorites ??some for as little as 1,000 rubles ($33.18).

The authenticity of the items was hard to ascertain. One seller of a large, silver-hued rock wrote in an advertisement on the portal Avito.ru: "Selling an unusual rock. It may be a piece of meteorite, it may be a bit of a UFO, it may be a piece of a rocket!"

Dick Vitale Talks Internet, Baby!

Love him or hate him, no sports broadcaster is more well known than the one ? the only ? Dickie V, baby!

We're speaking, of course, about Dick Vitale, the verbose and ever-exuberant college basketball color commentator. He inspires some fans and antagonizes others, but is an icon of the game any way you slice it. Simply put, he's a PTPer, baby! A primetime player! A Diaper Dandy! Flat-out awesome with a capital ... okay, we'll stop.

Anyway, when we got word he was up to spend a few minutes on the phone in support of an upcoming online auction for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, it was an opportunity that couldn't be passed up.

The V Foundation has raised more than $120 million since it was started by ESPN and longtime Vitale pal Jim Valvano, a legendary coach who died of cancer a month after announcing the foundation in March of 1993. Vitale has been one of the foundation's biggest proponents since then, and at noon ET on Feb. 26 will host an online auction using the site Outbid.com. Fans and supporters will be able to bid via iPhone or iPad for prizes including autographed memorabilia and dinner with Dickie V. He'll answer questions and interact live with participants during the auction as well.

Below are lightly edited excerpts from our conversation, including more about the auction, his beefy Twitter presence, the effect of Internet culture on college hoops and, of course, his March Madness predictions. Imagine Vitale's distinctive voice in your head to make what follows even more awesome.

On the Outbid auction for the V Foundation:

The V Foundation is very important to me. It's in memory of a buddy of mine, Jim Valvano, who lost his life to cancer at a very young age, when he was on top of the world. He asked his buddies to dedicate themselves to help him raise money for cancer research, and I know he's dancing in heaven seeing what we've been able to accomplish on his behalf. His legacy is not going to be cutting down the nets, but raising money to fight cancer.

Outbid offers another opportunity to do that and I'd do anything to raise money to fight this disease. I'm excited about it and thrilled about it. People will definitely be able to interact with me, share words with me, through the computer during the auction. In the world of social media and Facebook and Twitter, it's unbelievable the things people can do.

On why he loves Twitter (Vitale has more than 34,000 tweets to his name):

I've got almost half a million followers ? the number's 455,000 now, I just checked it ? and I'm able to fundraise and share things through the world of basketball. It's very positive. I like it so much because I'm able to increase my involvement with the V Foundation, and it's a great way to reach people. I'm able to promote my new book, Getting a W in the Game of Life. It's available in Barnes & Noble and on my website and I'm not making a dollar on it ? every dollar I'd make on the book is going toward the V Foundation.

On how the Internet, blogosphere and social media have changed college basketball for fans and players:

Well, the bottom line is obviously that the amount of information is incredible. You can get a wealth of information as games are going on, and see what's happening while it's happening. The negatives are that some of the people online are just unbelievable. There are people that go a step beyond, that say wrong things, that say hurtful things. I grew up with a positive attitude and have always been a glass-half-full not glass-half-empty type of person. You've got some people out there who don't care what they say or who they hurt, but I think most people are really positive.

Vitale's thoughts on this year's Final Four:

I think we're going to have one of the most magical March Madnesses ever this year. It's so wide open it's incredible. There's so much balance, so much parity. When it's all said and done on a neutral floor, you need several things. You need good guard play. You need an All-American who can make a big shot with the game on the line. And the third thing is obviously you need a team that can defend really well when the game slows down.

It's hard to pin it down, but right now I like Indiana, I like Louisville, I like Michigan. But you gotta keep an eye on Gonzaga. I'm telling you to keep an eye on Gonzaga.

?The Thousand Gestures,? or What I Learned from Hagar : So to Speak

The following is a guest post by Caitlin Cowan author of Every Creeping Thing, StS?s Poetry Runner-Up Winner

Yesterday I saw a pink plastic vacuum cleaner in the toy department at Target. This is why I?m a feminist.

We live in a world where Republican politicians in Michigan, the state where I was born, shouted down Rep. Lisa Brown?s (D-West Bloomfield) use of the word ?vagina? in official proceedings (apparently one ought not to use this anatomically correct word ?in mixed company,? according to Rep. Mike Callton, R-Nashville.) This is also why I?m a feminist. We live in a world where cleaning products are still pitched solely at women, where Klondike Bars are pitched to men with nagging wives. Come to think of it, that nagging wife seems to be everywhere these days: all she wants to do is talk about heirloom tomatoes and paint swatches?what a harpy! We live in a world where rape, sexual harassment, abortion, birth control, and other terms are still considered murky, taboo, or both. These, too, are reasons why I?m a feminist, and why I think that feminist discourse is a field to which all women writing today must contribute. I?m not foolishly suggesting that all writing by women, let alone all writing period, has to be or is inherently political, but rather that the landscape of our society is still deeply riven with inequalities that must be addressed and translated by all female writers?by all writers, really?from the budding creative writers that I teach at The University of North Texas all the way up to the finest writers of our generation.

I suppose I?m somewhere in the middle of that great swath of women, and my work seeks to engage with feminism any way that it can?I think of addressing feminist issues as a kind of triage: chaos is the order of the day, so dive in and tackle anything that needs tackling or calls out to you. My poem, ?Every Creeping Thing,? (which I was honored to have chosen as Runner-Up in So to Speak?s 2013 Poetry Contest by judge Danielle Pafunda) is one of which I?ve always been fond, but also one I?ve tinkered with for years.

In my MFA program, I was asked to read the Bible as literature for a readings course by an older male professor who was overtly religious. All semester he?I?ll go ahead and say it?bullied us into tapping into the mystical wonder and religious import of the Old Testament, which made me uneasy. Weren?t we supposed to be taking away universals? Storytelling and textual beauty? Poignant characters? I came away from that experience with a profound sympathy for one figure in particular: Hagar, the woman who figures into my poem. My professor, however, was not particularly interested in her, and dismissed my interest in her as a mere distraction.

Part of the reason I had such difficulty mimicking his zeal for the Old Testament as a whole was, in part, because of the countless women who are wronged, sent away, turned into salt (Lot?s wife doesn?t even merit a name! I?m still indignant) and the like. Hagar was a handmaid (read: slave) to Sarah, who, supposedly barren herself, gives Hagar to her husband Abraham so that they may conceive and fulfill god?s promise. To make a long story short, Hagar conceives a son, Ishmael, and later, Sarah is able conceive a son, named Isaac, with Abraham as well. Then, with Abraham?s blessing, Sarah jealously sends Hagar and Ishmael away:

And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: ?Let me not look upon the death of the child.? And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. (Genesis 21:14-16)

In this poem I imaginatively inserted myself at this very moment, to look down at Hagar as she puts the child under the shrubs and weeps, because it is a moment I still can?t move past. The sense of how ill-used she is, and the fact that her struggle as a mother and a woman is so easily reduced to her usefulness as a vessel (?purpose filled?), remain very compelling for me.

But things get better for Hagar. God hears her, helps her. Brings her back from the wilderness. My poem ends before any of this can happen, and points to the very real, and very demoralizing possibility (dare I say certainty? in mixed company?!) that the ?voice / among voices, that sibilating / hope? will not come, perhaps that it never came for Hagar and her son, nor will it come for us.

We are all, in a sense, women alone in the underbrush, and I don?t think we can afford to wait for a voice from above to right our compasses; instead we must be our own compasses, for Hagar, for Rep. Lisa Brown, and for the little girl who?s going to get that awful pink plastic vacuum for her birthday?I hope she stuffs it full of frogs.
