Job Networking Group Comes To The Oakland Public Library

Oakland, New Jersey, February 27, 2012 ? The Oakland Public Library is pleased to announce the formation of the Oakland chapter of Neighbors-helping-Neighbors (NhN), a volunteer moderator led organization offering free weekly support and networking meetings for people actively seeking employment.

NhN is a free, highly successful and recognized peer-led volunteer support group for people who are actively looking for work and would like to beginor re-invigorate their job search. The members include anyone in career transition, recent college grads, laid-off workers, unemployed or

Founded in River Edge in January, 2011, NhN has fostered an environment in which group members assist each other in job search techniques and suggestions based on personal experience plus personal and professional networking. Resources are available at the Oakland Public Library to assist members of the public with their job search.

?Not feeling alone or powerless are critical factors in a job search, particularly for those who have been out of work for an extended period of time,? explained John Fugazzie, founder and group leader of NhN. ?Support, discussion and information sharing can make all the difference. Report: BP ready for lengthy oil spill trial

LONDON (AP) ? BP chief executive Bob Dudley said the company is able to fight a lengthy court battle over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dudley, who took control of BP in October 2010 after former chief executive Tony Hayward resigned amid criticism over the way he had handled the oil spill, told Sunday Telegraph newspaper that BP can continue to function even if the court case that begins in New Orleans Monday continues for years.

"We have to remember we are a business that invests in decade-long cycles," he said in an interview published Sunday. "For the vast majority of people now at BP, the company is back on its feet and it is starting to move forward," he said.

BP has set aside $40 billion to deal with fines and associated costs of the April 20, 2010, blowout of BP's deepwater Macondo well which killed 11 workers and injured 17. The burning drilling rig Deepwater Horizon toppled and sank to the Gulf floor, where it sits today.

It took engineers 85 days to permanently cap the well. By then, more than 200 million gallons of oil leaked from the well and had covered much of the northern half of the Gulf of Mexico ? endangering fisheries, killing marine life and shutting down offshore oil drilling operations.

President Barack Obama called the BP spill "the worst environmental disaster the nation has ever faced."

Dudley said BP had improved safety standards on its rigs, five of which are working again in the Gulf of Mexico, and that the company was still committed to deepwater drilling.

"We had a choice whether or not to back away from the offshore industry and the deep water industry but we have a lot of great strengths in this area and so, rather than move away, we have gone in with even more commitment, more time and more people, more expertise," he said.

On a late afternoon in Dec?em?ber 2008, the experiment She?harbano ?Sheri? Sangji was work?ing on went up in flames. If convicted on all three counts, Harran faces up to four and a half years in prison, and U.C.L.A. faces $4.5 million in fines. The university terms the charges ?outrageous? and Sangji?s death a ?tragic ac?cident.? It is planning a vigorous defense.

The charges, apparently the first to be brought in an academic safety incident, raise the widely neglected issue of safety standards at university labs. A scathing re?port issued last October by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) brought additional attention to
the problem. The investigation, launched after a January 2010 explosion at Texas Tech University maimed a graduate student, mentions 120 mishaps, including the one involving Sangji. The report outlines systemic problems common on many campuses, such as failure to report accidents, and a lack of proper safety training for students and staff. Many university labs operate as quasi-independent ?fiefdoms,? according to the report; lab chiefs have great authority to observe or ignore safety standards and often see outside safety checks as ?infringing upon their academic freedom.?

The California criminal charges arise from citations and fines that the state?s Division of Occupa?tional Safety and Health leveled against U.C.L.A. in May 2009 for ?serious? violations, among them failing to make timely corrections of unsafe conditions or to provide required training and personal protective gear. (Not only was Sangji not wearing a lab coat, but her synthetic sweatshirt may have ?caught fire,? according to the citation.)

The rate of serious mishaps in industrial labs is lower than that in academic labs, in part because industrial labs are more tightly regulated, according to experts, including James Kaufman, president of the Laboratory Safety Institute in Natick, Mass. Some experts believe that attaching criminal responsibility to preventable mishaps may encourage greater accountability.

The decision does not say how late the C-7 was just that it was simply after the 25 day period to file, measured from the day the Board sent a notice that a claim had been indexed until the date a reply was received by the Board.

As a result, all the expert opinion notwithstanding, the employer became liable for future payments to a surviving spouse that could exceed $2,000,000.

The decision makes mention of some requirements that could, and often SHOULD, give employers and carriers insomnia. The period starts to run if either the employer OR carrier receives the notice of claim indexing.? Why should that be so troubling?

But that has all changed. Attorneys for workers would be wise to consider that they too have to meet deadlines and they too could be on the wrong end of a future decision. [WCx]

STORRS, Conn. (AP) ? Kim Barnes Arico and her St. John's Red Storm ended two incredible UConn streaks and years of frustration with one shocking victory.

Shenneika Smith's 3-pointer from the wing with 8 seconds left lifted St. John's to a 57-56 win over No. 2 Connecticut on Saturday night, snapping the Huskies' 99-game home court winning streak. It was the Huskies' first home loss to an unranked opponent in nearly 19 years.

"It's truly unbelievable," Barnes Arico said. "There aren't many teams that can say they beat UConn in this place and now we're one of them."

St. John's became only the fifth team to win at Storrs since 1993, joining Tennessee, Georgia, Notre Dame and Rutgers. The Red Storm, who have won seven of their last eight games ? the lone loss coming to then-No. 2 Notre Dame ? haven't had much success anywhere against the Huskies. They lost the previous 27 meetings since a home victory over the Huskies in 1993.

"It's amazing for our team," said senior Da'Shena Stevens, who led the Red Storm with 15 points and eight rebounds. "We've been playing great. We made a statement tonight. To play against a really good team on their home court with what they were going for tonight and to beat them is amazing."

Trailing by two with 16 seconds left, Nadirah McKenith drove the lane and kicked it out to Smith, who hit the 3 to give the Red Storm (18-8, 10-3 Big East) the lead.

"When (coach) wrote the play up, I hadn't hit one all day and this was the going to be the one I hit," said Smith, who had only made three of her 22 3-point attempts this season before that shot.

UConn (24-3, 11-2) had one final chance, but Bria Hartley's 3-point attempt from the corner was short, setting off a wild celebration at midcourt by the Red Storm.

"Days like today are a reminder that you're only supposed to win when you play really well and beat the other team. We didn't deserve to win. I don't care if we won 900 in a row at home," Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said. "Leading up to that last shot, if that shot goes in ? hey that's 100 in a row. Realistically, though, St. John's outplayed us today. They did what they wanted to do better than what we wanted to do. It was a fitting end for them."

The Huskies last lost at home on March 6, 2007, falling to Rutgers in the Big East championship game. The NCAA counts the Huskies' postseason games in Hartford and Storrs as home games. With the UConn men's loss earlier in the day to No. 12 Marquette in Hartford, it marked the first time that both Huskies teams lost at home on the same day since Feb. 27, 1993.

UConn became the latest high-ranked team to lose to an unranked opponent. West Virginia shocked Notre Dame last weekend and Alabama upset No. 7 Kentucky.

"Isn't it great for women's basketball," Barnes Arico said. "It's unbelievable and great for our game, our game is growing. When I first started here, people were losing by 50 or 60 night in and night out. It says women's basketball has come a long way and there is a lot of parity in the game."

As shocking as the other two top 10 losses were, the Huskies had always taken care of unranked teams, winning their last 261 straight at home and 173 overall against non-Top 25 opponents. Louisville was the last unranked team to knock off the Huskies at home in the NCAA tournament in 1993.

"I think a loss is a loss," UConn center Stefanie Dolson said. "I don't think we thought about it as, 'Oh we lost and it was our first in 20 years or whatever. We lost because of the way we played. We're just extremely angry with ourselves, frustrated with ourselves."

The Huskies had shattered their own Division I record of 69 straight home wins that they shared with Tennessee. UConn set the overall women's record in November by beating Dayton and passing Division III Rust (Miss.) College, which won 88 straight at home from 1982-89. All but two of those wins during UConn's streak have come by double digits and 35 of them by more than 40.

Stanford now has the longest active streak at 76 games, which includes last year's win that snapped UConn's record 90-game overall winning streak.

The home streak began in the first round of the 2007 NCAAs with an 82-33 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in Storrs.

UConn almost extended it to 100 against the Red Storm when Dolson hit a lay-in with 34 seconds left to give UConn a 56-54 advantage after a back-and-forth affair.

Neither team was able to build more than a four-point lead in the second half. Trailing 34-32 at the break, UConn rallied to take a 42-39 lead with 14 minutes left. From there the two teams traded points over the next 13 minutes. Kiah Stokes' lay-in with 9:02 left made it 48-44 UConn. The Huskies didn't hit another basket until Kelly Faris connected for a 3-pointer with the shot clock running down with 3:31 left. It gave UConn a 53-52 lead.

But St. John's wouldn't quit. After Mary Nwachukwu hit a jumper to make it 54-53 St. John's, Kaleena Mosqueeda-Lewis hit a free throw with 1:07 left to tie the score and set up the exciting finish.

Mosqueeda-Lewis finished with 12 points to lead UConn.

Eating poison ivy or fire: Co-evolution with a species is critically dependent on the manner of interaction between the species. That is, using a plant as a poison for millennia does not mean it's also safe to eat. It does mean it's likely to be a good poison.

Modern crops are different from older species, just by hybridization/breeding: Yes. But they're based on the genes of crops that have co-evolved with humans, using a process that's also naturally occurring (though using it somewhat artificially). And they may indeed be lacking benefits afforded by progenitor cultivars and species. Likely no one tested the resulting breeds for the subtle (and certainly not the unknown) benefits of the original species when selecting their "successes". Older species are probably better for you, generally, if not as tasty or pretty.

Many or most modern food plants are a novelty to any given person's ancestry: True, but not a novelty to humans in general. So the question here is how much pressure is put on the humans to evolve versus the crops? Also, there are differences between what foods different races can tolerate.

As stupid as that may sound at first, there is actually a very important concept being asked about. What's prudent and what's ignorantly fearful?

We need to weigh several factors. The possibility and degree of benefit. The possibility and degree of harm. The amount of knowledge we have about the topic. The amount of knowledge we have about the scope of the topic. (Rumsfeld's "known knowns" and "unknown unknowns" idea.) My review of these leaves me on the side of playing it safe.

The primary wildcard that makes me sit up and pay close attention to folks playing with the genes of food crops is the fact that "Life finds a way." Crops breed out of our control. We've seen it already with GMO. If you're not using a time-tested method for changing crop genes (breeding, for example), you want to figure out more clearly what kind of results you'll be making. Fuck it up in a bad way and the "life finds a way" factor could leverage your mistake into a catastrophe.

But, even if life does tend to find a way, I'd be for scientists experimenting with Frankenstein GMO crops in tightly controlled environments, and testing the results over the course of a couple generations of test subjects. But I guess that's infeasible.

Likely we'll all be test subjects. And then we'll just have to wait a few generations to iron out the big problems, and a few hundred generations to smooth out the relationship, and a few hundred more generations to polish it out to a beautifully symbiotic sheen.
